Can anyone recommend any decent manga? I read Akira years ago (pretty but loooong) but that’s about the limit of my experience. The local bookshop is full of the stuff so there must be something good, but a random flick-through hasn’t inspired me. I’d prefer it if I can tell the male and female characters apart and I’d rather not read anything set in a school, but if you think there’s something that’s really worth looking at, I’ll take a look.

I would recommend Makoto Yukimura’s Planetes (review here — http://kleefeldoncomics.blogspot.com/2008/01/in-space-no-one-can-hear-you-take-smoke.html) and Son Hee-joon and Kim Youn-kyung’s id_eNTITY (review here — http://kleefeldoncomics.blogspot.com/2007/03/identity-update.html). And of course Kazuo Koike’s and Goseki Kojima’s Lone Wolf and Cub is a must-read. Phenomenal work there.

Thanks – that’s plenty to get me started.

“Ghost in the Shell” by Masamune Shirow is another classic manga that fulfills your requirements. In japanese it’s titled “Public Security Section 9″, so I’d say there are some similarities with Tozo. ;-)

Heh heh! Someone else suggested “Ghost” (on my LiveJournal) and now I know this I shall definitely take a look – thanks!

I’d recommend the Batman: Deathmask from DC’s Manga arm. Good stuff, man.

I’ll add that to my list. I must investigate manga more.

Pluto, by Naoki Urasawa and Osamu Tezuka. It’s a revamp of ‘Atom’.
