118

Last time: according to legend, the Soul Shard protected Venezia (forerunner to Nova Venezia) from invasion by the Spider Queen.

I was recently plugging the French version of Tozo on a francophone comics message board and one of the commenters said he thought the story was too complicated – and that was only after 20 strips! Goodness know what he’d think after the 118th.

But I like complicated comics – my favourite all-time comic (and a major influence on me) is the Adventures of Luther Arkwright by Bryan Talbot, a multilayered tale with a giant cast. I didn’t have a clue what was going on until the final chapter but I was quite happy to be lost in all the sub-plots in the meantime and the ending, where all the threads came together, blew me away. It can be read online for a fee but there’s no substitute for the paper version, of course, which I heartily recommend (I’d give the sequel, Heart of Empire, a miss though. Some things are best left alone…).

David: I have just come across your wonderful comic. I am trying to get caught up. I noticed the comment on your story be too complicated and had to comment. I like my stories to be complex, not one-dimensional. “Luther Arkwright” is one of my favorites, and I enjoyed “The Incal,” by Jodorowsky and Moebius. Yours measures up to these. Thanks for the complicated story.

You’re welcome, James! And thanks for the great comments – glad you’re enjoying the complexity.
